What will a dumpster rental actually cost me? total = base rental + max(0, tons − tons included) × overage rate per ton + extra days × per-day rate Combine the base rental, your expected tonnage, the overage rate and any extra days into a total. Built to expose the gap between a quoted price and an invoiced one.
The formula
total = base rental + max(0, tons − tons included) × overage rate per ton + extra days × per-day rate
Worked example
A 20 yard container at $375 including 3 tons, filled with 4.5 tons, kept 4 days past the included window at $12 a day: $375 + (1.5 × $75) + (4 × $12) = $535.50. The quote was $375.
Assumptions
- Default rates are commercial estimate ranges, not a tariff. Replace every default with the figure your own hauler quotes you
- Fuel surcharges and percentage-based environmental fees are not modelled, because they are applied inconsistently. Ask whether your quote includes them
- A permit fee, where your placement needs one, is separate and paid to the city rather than the hauler
