## Why we publish a phone number instead of a fee

Because almost every per-city dumpster permit fee circulating online traces back to a rental company rather than to the city that charges it. While building this section we found a fee and duration for one Wisconsin city published in the voice of the municipality — "according to the official city website" — on a national broker's landing page, and absent from the city's own permit page.

So the rule for this section is mechanical: a fee appears on our page only when we read it on the city's own site, and we link to that page. Otherwise you get the department, its number and its URL, and we say plainly that the fee is not published online.

## What the permit is called where you live

Names vary and the requirement does not: occupancy permit, permit to occupy the right-of-way, obstruction licence, street use permit. It is almost always issued by engineering or public works rather than a building department, because the concern is the roadway rather than the structure.

One more trap worth knowing: the right-of-way often extends several feet past the curb onto grass you mow. A container "just on the lawn by the street" can still be on public land.
